This is a great video essay. It covers some points I wanted to talk about: how Cure (1997) builds patterns of expectations.

The opening of Full Metal Jacket (1987) is about faces. Ambiguous, impenetrable faces, wearing millions of vastly different and identical emotions.
And hair, of course.

Snowpiercer (2014) has three questions to answer:
1. What's the worldview;
2. How to push through the train;
3. How to build everything towards the confrontation at the end.
After a rather successful act 1 build up, Boon decided on the most forceful method to answer them questions... midway into […]

Ah yes, *reverse script writing* is my new favourite spare time hobby.

Pick a film and write as you pause. Great practice on observation. Getting into director's mind.

You can even check with the original if you wanna feel bad.

(Spent a little above one hour on 10 minutes of a film. 7 pages.)

Why is there a metallic vibe to dialogues in Michael Haneke's films? Does it have something to do with recording equipments? Or just German in general...

I think the reason why I love 2001: a space odyssey (1968) a lot is the way it does visual storytelling.
A notable example is "Computer Malfunction" scene. Different camera angles, cutting back and forth to crewmates and the computer screen - you get what's going on.
Also the scene where Dave […]

YES, this video essay on Cure (1997) is still up on Vimeo:

Think about it: Uzumaki shares the same theme as Cure, and Paranoia Agent. All three are basically telling the story of a society under threat of a supernatural being that attacks a collective psychological vulnerability that gradually shifts people compulsively crazy.

...and the lighting change is also seen in Vertigo (1958).

A lighting change in Cloud (2024).
Very subtle dim as the conversation goes on.

Red, Green, Yellow. Three important colours of Vertigo (1958).
Halfway through, Midge (represented by yellow as always) suddenly dresses in red when she draws that parody portrait.
If green represents Madeline (obsession), red represents passion (driving the […]

Chekhov's bulb.
Usually, an independent pre-title scene is supposed to be some visuals of... production company logos. Like an abstract hand lighting up a bulb in picture 1.
So it's a surprise how it ends up becoming a Chekhov's bulb.

I like how Snowpiercer (2013) doesn't take it seriously, especially in the middle. At the end of the day, Boon is an absurdist.

[Fight Club (Minor Spoilers)]

Unique film. It actually puts part of the premise in its twist. The real twist to me, however, is when Space Monkeys become office space

Isn't it odd how this script (https://twopagesaweek.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/line-of-sight1.pdf) and this short sketch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FN1vPSkfVkA) are sharing the same premise???

A variation of The Confrontational Front Shot:
"Confrontational Low Angle Front Shot"
Subject now looks way more intimidating.
(Again, Takeshi Kitano in p4 has a slightly different framing.)

Mastodon's schedule functionality is super buggy.
I discovered that posts with multiple images often change order randomly when scheduled.
It happens to both #tusky and #moshidon clients. (The official web interface doesn't support it.)
What's worse, as soon as you log into #fedilab app, Tusky […]

The Confrontational Front Shot.
A technique seen in Cure (1997) where the character is placed in the dead center. It creates a direct, overwhelming and confrontational sense. A very deliberate type of framing. Framing is usually *bust* - cropping from chest up.
Also […]

Music as a motif is very helpful with understanding the plot. Take Vertigo (1958) as an example.
(I happen to be listening to its OST after a rewatch)
- Opening chase and midpoint climax use similarly thrilling tunes.
- "The Dream" sounds the same as the scene at Ernie's
