I think it makes sense... ALL the marbles in existence are NOT here, thus zero marbles.
We're not saying that one marble I painted a face on and called Gary is not here. I mean, Gary's also not here, but all his buddies are away, too.
Are there any other examples of times when reality breaks grammar and we just have to deal with it?

Example: Zero...it's a number so it has to be singular or plural, but since it isn't singular or plural, we just made it plural. "There are zero marbles."

Some federal workers are going back to work.

The USDA has been ordered to temporarily give over 5,000 workers their jobs back.

Dozens of CDC scientists have been reinstated after being illegally fired.

The National Science Foundation has rehired half of the workers it fired.
