The Clean Air Act of 1956 was landmark legislation passed after a devastating london "Great Smog" in 1952. Aimed at cutting coal smoke pollution from homes & industry by allowing local authorities to create "smoke control areas," mandating smokeless fuels, it significantly improved air quality.
