I'm really enjoying the old-school feel of the Dean Jones One-Day Cup in the Aussie domestic season - but in particular the old school feel of more mixing Sheffield Shield and ODLA fixtures.

I know the ECB are so fixated on 100 they wont conaider it, but Champ/ODC more integrated would work!

I do think this is going to be a pretty good evenly contested #Ashes, where probably home advantage here or there will help Australia creep over the line - Cummins will be sorely missed & his absence might help England early doors; but "nothing to fear"?

Youth talks, age teaches.

Wow. Late drama as Tasmania beat WA by 3 runs in a Sheffield Shield thriller!

The West was cruising at 5/198 before slumping to 8/215 neediing 259. Two late strikes for Gabe Bell (pictured) did tue work for the Island State.

May your bowlers always smile at your wides and no balls, may your overs always count six.

Well lived, and you will be well remembered.

RIP Dicky Bird, one of the greats.

Reminded of Scyld Berry's Cricket: The Game of Life, in which he describes his joyful memories of watching cricket as a boy at a sooty Bramall Lane.

And wearing sunhats - some in the age of the baggy green revival felt the white sun hat was a post-war addition and/or abomination - but they were quite clearly also worn back in the day.

As one of the rare ones who loves cricket but also enjoys baseball, I have just added Ed Smith's "Playing Hardball" to my reading list. An interesting cultural comparison from a Cambridge University and Kent cricketer who trained with the NY Mets.

A game of "football" was played in Hobart in the winter of 1870 between the High School team & the 18th Regiment (Royal Irish) - who were the last British regiment to serve in Australia before the colonies had to provide their own local defence.

But the rules? Not Rugby, Association, nor Victorian.

Still available in Hobart.

Frankly I think this photo shows it sits neatly in the foreground of the CBDs low profile.

A bat signed by all four squads playing in the 1987 Perth Challenge series, held to commemorate Australia's unsuccessful defence of their 1983 America's Cup win.

Hosts Australia were joined by the West Indies, Pakistan & eventual winners England - their first international white ball trophy.

It's hard to get excited about the Lions tour because at this point it feels like Australia are going to get smashed.

Shubman Gill, take a bow. The first man to ever score a 150 and a 250 in the same test - and joins Lara, Gooch, Sangakkara, and Taylor in making over 400 in a single test.

When Aussie quicks have wind in their sails, they really can be destructive.

Australia won by 159 runs

Despite the failure at Arundel, Taylor would go on to amass 839 test runs at 83.90 had been bettered in an Ashes series only by Bradman and Hammond (both in five Tests to Taylor’s six), and alongside opening partner Marsh 347 at 31.54) they would build unassailable platforms for Aust to attack.
