This is highly debated amongst many people; so much so that I doubt that there's a genuine answer! I tend not to worry about that too much - it bears no relevance to the stories I write anyway...!

The manual option definitely attracts more player interaction, which is a big plus in my mind! What you could do is base the UI on a steam loco's actual cab controls (albeit simplified) - make the throttle knob look more like a steam loco regulator, the direction toggle like a reverser lever, etc?
