Patterns of lust-stained blues and purples peppered the skin and trailed beyond eyesight, pushing doubt out the door, never to be seen again. Not a week prior, Rodney stood with the rest of the ducal court in horror as Archduke Joshua Rosfield declared his betrothed. The Lord Commander denied it then, even as the young boy sat in his brother’s lap, decorated by a single quill heavy in possession and the unthinkable. It was so unthinkable, in fact, that Rodney refused to believe such lows were being committed in Rosalith Castle. No, he believed it a farce. Perhaps even a tactical choice of marriage in the name of protection and self preservation. That was until now, eyes wide as he watched Clive dart from Joshua’s chambers, covered in little else but an ill-fitting nightshirt, his engagement choker, and bruises. They were not markings of combat for Rodney knew his star shield’s training and schedule. And, what fleeting relief it was, they looked not to be strikes of ire. No, they were clearly love bites centralized on places of delight and pleasure, most abundant on his inner thighs and shoulders. To solidify the observation, the curl of a smile was caught on the First Shield’s lips as he scurried away to the shadows. Destroying Rodney’s heart all the while. A budding denial, bitter and scathing, scaled the Lord Commander’s throat, mixing with bile and butterfly. He dared not face it, instead packing it down as he fought daydream and loss of days long behind him. Rodney wept.
