⚠️#Nutrient reduction strategies ⬇️ should consider nutrient #stoichiometry to maintain a healthy #river #ecosystem ❇️

The business-as-usual scenario may lead to a higher eutrophication risk in the #GBM basin & the #BayofBengal The #Sustainable scenario will reduce #nutrient loads through better management but may lead to nutrient imbalances, increasing the risk of #HarmfulAlgalBlooms🦠

#FutureScenarios show a consistent rising trend of #TN and #TP #load deliveries to the #GBMRiver, varying with #socioeconomic #pathways & #nutrient management. Implementing #effective #nutrient management #strategies in #SSP1 can #reduce loads compared to #SSP3 & #SSP5

#Historical concentrations at the basin outlet into the #BayofBengal #Tripled for #TN (from 0.60 to 1.9 mg N/l) & #Doubled for TP (from 0.1 to 0.2 mg P/l). By 2050, projected #TN & #TP concentrations at the outlet continue to rise following #increased load deliveries

#PointSources contribution is significant (25-38% in 2019), particularly near major urban centres such as #Delhi, #Agra and #Kanpur in the upper reaches, #Varanasi and #Patna in the middle reaches, and #Dhaka in the #GBM #Delta

#Agriculture 🌽appears to be the primary source of #TN and #TP, with significant contributions linked to #FoodProduction 🍲activities, in the #GreenRevolution States in #India 🇮🇳and in the #GBM #Delta in #Bangladesh🇧🇩

#Anthropogenic #sources dominanted throughout the historical period, driven by #agriculture 🌾mainly, with #sewage discharge 🚽important particularly in the large number of densely populated 👥#urban_areas 🏘️

Our results show that #Nutrient delivery to the #River & export at the #BayofBengal Tripled for #TN and Doubled for #TP and will continue to rise in the #future

We employed the #spatially explicit @IMAGE_DGNM to simulate #TN & #TP sources & transport in (1970-2019) & future (2020-2050) under #SharedSocioeconomicPathways #SSPs🌏
#IMAGE_DGNM accounts for both #anthropogenic👨‍👩‍👧 &natural sources including diffuse & point sources @ 0.5° degree
