How does two times one half of John Travolta in Gotti result in what appears to be the child of John Cena and Nathan Fielder?

A movie no one ever talks about - it might not even be THAT good - but you still love it. 📽

Brian De Palma's Passion (2012). Just a wonderful romp through and exploration of genre film. Great performances, great direction, and great Pino Donaggio score.

Peak Venetian blinds cinema.

📽️ Anyway, if you like Mario Bava, Edwige Fenech, giallo, or And Then There Were None riffs, I'd recommend you check it out---if for no other reason than to witness Fenech's vast hair.

📽️ We follow the glass balls as they bounce down the curving stairs, roll across the hall, and lead us to the bath tub, where the next scene begins. We don't need to see who wins the fight; the fact that it occurred is enough. The camera leads us onward.

📽️ Then, in a transcendental moment, one of the combatants is thrown into a decorative display of hazy glass orbs. The camera forgets the fight, and follows the tumbling marbles.

📽️ The camera is a character of its own. In scene, two men erupt into a fistfight. The camera observes through the square gaps of a screen, like a pixelated Sternbergian lace.

📽️ Bava uses swirling pans and wildly long zooms to transition, making the isolated island feel claustrophobically close. The mansion is adorned with modern art on gallery-like white walls, and the characters' fashion is larger than life.
August 22, 2023 at 5:15 AM
📽️ It's also just a delightful film. Bava disliked it, as he was brought in at the last minute, felt the script to be a cheap And Then There Were None rip-off, and later claimed to have thought of it as just a payday. But the filmmaking is at once precise, playful, and inventive.

📽️ The pane of glass was several feet from the camera, so while most shots features actors behind it a few fit actors up close in front, which helps sell the painting as part of the environment. (In a few frames you can spot reflections in the glass of the nearby actor as she moves.)

📽️ One of my favorite little matte paintings is in Mario Bava's Five Dolls For An August Moon (1970): The absurd house perched on the cliff. Bava painted it himself on location on a pane of glass, to match the natural light on the cliffside.
