I just learned of this phenomenon, too, but at Covent Garden. It's called "Pick & Cheese".

The vowel sounds strike me as particularly mixed up, though. The actor's from Devon (further South and West). Maybe he's been coached to flatten some vowels to sound more Northern, but that "arsk" really stands out as South of the midlands.

Not particularly? I may be losing my ear for it, so could be wide of the mark, but if it's Gloucestershire, it's a moderately wealthy area. His accent isn't particularly strong; often, folk can soften their accent if they move away, especially if they go to uni, so may indicate higher education.

I don't think the accent is northern: his pronunciation of "ask" has a long 'a' (like "arsk"), which you don't get up North. Then again, other vowels are very flat which is less common down South. Maybe Gloucestershire?

"Eugenics" is a great cat name!

If you charge a fare, it's a *viable* business idea. See, for example, @pedalme.bsky.social .

That's a lot of quince! The piano-accordion player with the Havocs has a good recipe for a tarta de Santiago that, if I recall rightly, incorporates quince.

If you change the name, you might have to change your description of it, too. Was it something like, "seems harmless enough, but when you look closer it turns out to be a right bastard"?

They're a safety item, so they probably went overboard on testing as preparedness for any future litigation, and that will be factored into the price. I wonder if there are licensing fees for each car seat vendor's attachment, too - I wouldn't be surprised if these are covered by patents.

Yep. Fuck that closet Tory, in particular.

Retrofits may not be as elegant as something designed with the motor as an integral part, but I love the idea of some day fitting a mid-drive on my Gazelle Cabby. I bought it when I lived somewhere flat, but there are hills everywhere here!

My even dumber favourite paraphrase: "shit or get off the pot". Presumably, the "pot" would be the road ... if it's the driving seat, that doesn't help at all.

Crossings like these have lower installation costs, far lower maintenance costs and higher reliability when they do not rely on over-hyped but temperamental adaptive technology that needs regular adjustment: just include a short cyclist phase with each parallel traffic and pedestrian phase.

Also, The new cyclist crossing at Dana and Haste *already* fails to detect cyclists heading North on Dana: cross traffic and pedestrians get a crossing phase, while cyclists who have been waiting for 1 partial plus 2 full cycles of the lights do not.

Plenty of folk over here are angry, and there have been sizable protests in DC, New York, and elsewhere, but little is making it into the news.
