Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Not so many years ago, billionaires were a pretty rare, often reclusive breed. However, in late 2025, the number of US billionaires is 1,135 w/ a total of 3,028 globally (Forbes). So when you're a funny-lookin' fella w/ a goofy hairstyle, you talk a bunch of witless, stupid smack to get attention.

The US national debt surpassed $38 trillion (Not $37T) as of late October 2025. Recent increases have been rapid with a $1 trillion rise in a short period, partly driven by a government shutdown & concerns are growing about long-term sustainability & the rising cost of interest payments on the debt.

States are given sole authority to certify a specific company's voting system for election use. As such, states have the option not to certify/decertify Dominion's use in future elections. Any material change in a company's voting system (hardware and/or software) can trigger a state re-cert.

This song by Barry McGuire tops my list--both a protest song & an anguished lament for a very troubled nation. It certainly sums up the 1960's...and the Trump era--especially the last verse with its line: "Hate your next door neighbor but don't forget to say grace."

San Francisco is sure doing its part. Despite SF's commercial office vacancy rate being 33.6% at the end of Q3 2025, the city just approved a new 41-story tower near the Transamerica Pyramid. This despite big tech companies offloading lots & lots of office space & employees.

It's effective, classic, memorable, and iconic branding. Much better than a lot of the newer studio stuff.

That old lion just ragdolls & mauls the hell out of David Ellison's pretentious, bombastic, forgettable & BORING Skydance credit sequence...

One of the biggest problems w/ McKinsey people is they are high on their own supply of infallibility & think they're smarter than they actually are. They also typically fail to apply the common sense test to their proposed approaches/solutions before implementation--book-smart but not street-smart.

KO'd as in knocked-out. NPR blurb author unfamiliar with the various activities that result in such an outcome. Hope they don't write about the World Series next and how many "ribbies" (RBI's) Ohtani got in a game.

Gotta' keep milking the cow until it runs dry. I'm just thankful Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale & company teamed-up 4 The Dark Knight Trilogy. Of all the Batman swings, the only movies that were home runs. Point is that very capable, creative miners can still find huge nuggets in tired material.

It'll be very telling to see what the federal election "observers" being dispatched to CA for Prop 50 vote report back to DOJ. They're being sent to Orange County which is THE CA county that serves as a role model (state & nationally) for best practice registrar of voters office/election operations.

"...a group of prominent Republican donors who'd been accused of illegal activities."

It's deja vu all over again.
October 26, 2025 at 6:09 AM
Sure do. Context: DeLay referred to federal agents, specifically from Immigration & Naturalization Service (INS), as "jack-booted thugs" in 2000. Delay said this in response to an INS raid on a Texas business owned by a group of prominent Republican donors who'd been accused of illegal activities.

The $1.2B penalty will only release $500M in withheld fed funds so seems an obvious loser: why pay $1.2B to get only $500M? UCLA must say no. Other UC's will be next unless this shakedown w/ UCLA is rejected. Don't know why UC isn't dealing with feds at the system level rather than the campus level.
October 26, 2025 at 5:52 AM
Thanks for your even-handed discussion of UVA's situation. Re: proposed $1.2B financial penalty for UCLA, do you have any insight into how this $ amount was determined/calculated? Seems totally arbitrary & entirely ridiculous. Curious if this $ amount has any grounding in fed civ rights law/reality.

The only thing I believe is that Lurie spoke to him--all other alleged details/events are totally suspect. Funny that a guy who has little to no interest in the President's Daily Brief (intelligence) is getting his SF sitrep/advice from two billionaires/dopes who are only in the City occasionally.

The ranchers would be outraged & entitled even if their herds were grazing on public (BLM) lands.
October 24, 2025 at 7:57 AM
Agreed. But cattle/sheep ranchers in Northern California can't even co-exist w/ a few wolves who've dared to reenter the state w/out having a conniption fit, claiming irreparable $ injury (stock loss) & wanting to kill every last wolf. Would be same w/ buffalo: "They're eating MY (cattle's) grass!"

Head of UT's Board said something similar & sounded eager to sign. Given the political realities in TX, I'm guessing UT-A will sadly find this compact an offer it can't refuse. UVA only signed the DOJ agreement yesterday because it had no better moves to make--live to fight another day & all that.
