Why must I calculate how worth it it is to save a $1.50 candle based on how many years it will sit in the drawer til next use? 0 - that would be 6 years, too much, throw it out. But a 7?! Just 3 years in the drawer, somehow worth keeping….

I also get to learn how to identify plants in my yard - which are invasive, which to help have more space to do their thing, how to gentle-warrior relate to the poison ivy that is stealth and skilled at never quite being gone. I even found a blueberry bush overshadowed by a much larger plant.

One thing I love about gardening is how it creates more connection with the natural ebb and flow of seasons. I’ve rarely ever bought radishes or mustard greens at the store, but now am so appreciative of them for their quick, easy grow, spring harvest abilities

I’m very appreciative the kids are explicitly being taught basic emotional development and friendship skills. I can’t even imagine what that would have been like in my childhood

Sharing parts of myself with the class at very intentional moments was vulnerable yet essential to encourage them to take similar risks. (4)

While our focus is on intellectual inquiry, emotions & incorporating personal reflections play a key role in this process. Has me reflecting on bell hooks’ wisdom about bringing the sacred into teaching in Teaching to Transgress. (3)
