This is my problem with like 90% of the whole "smart home" type things, i love tech, so the idea of it always appeals to me, but i've found that in most cases it's generally either easier, faster, more reliable or a combination of those three to do it the "old-fashioned" way.

The bit that annoys me with vapes is that people seem to think they can use them any/every where, in shops, in peoples cars, lifts, all places that most of them would never think of smoking, but they'll happily vape.

The only non-cheating explanation i can think of, and have no idea how likely it is, is if your wife is trying to lose/gain weight/muscle and she bought them in a different size than she currently is to motivate/reward herself? No idea if anyone would do that with lingerie, though, seems doubtful.
