I think it's landing, not taking off. BTW Cormorants actually can't fly well right after diving because their feathers aren't oil-protected like a duck's. That's why they often bask with their wings open, drying off.

I picked up my camera for the first time since mid-July because #FallColors were peaking in the NYC area and they will only last a couple of days. It was worth it.
