Head speaker Mara cites the old Filipino belief of Animism. People back then worshipped the environment and what it did for them. In the same way, in present times, people look up to those political figures who they perceive provide for them too.

The importance of cultural institutions and it's impact cannot be understated either. These factors play a role into why politics are so powerful in a country like the Philippines.
