I… thought those who served were without direction and had to seek it from outside themselves.” His head lowered and he broke eye contact with her for several seconds before looking up again. “Now, without those I had thought untethered and undisciplined, I might have soon had nothing instead of profiting from controlling a vast stretch of it.” Jessica smiled as he finished. “That’s a lot to admit, Torsis. So, what are you asking?” Torrain emitted a long, somehow unthreatening, growl. “If you, if we succeed, and there are legal consequences for any of you, will you accept my covering the expense of the very best private counsel?”

Nor did you make excuses for Defense Command having yet to reply to my request for an exploratory ship to do an independent assessment of the Void.” Stevens frowned at the last one. “I can speak to that. They want to outfit a quantum ship to briefly hold station in the vortex but there was a delay in the funding.” Torrain scowled. “They can likely get the same result by sending two standard quantum ships through in tandem at repeated intervals. They should have asked me before they asked a room full of nattering professors.” His eyes went back to Dirac. “As for you… for once… not nattering… there were a few other things you left out. You focused mostly on those items that have been resolved. Why?” “Because we need to show progress, just as you wanted, and economic challenges have a significant psychological variable in terms of obtaining forward momentum.” “Or… you’ve become what the Beta Quadrant Council hoped and want a better deal.
