Father of 3 boys, married to an artist.
In my mid-fifties, during lockdown, discovered I'm quite at outdoor running.
Unlikely to post about anything other than running.
Got some thinking to do. Got this as a result of the Ljubljana Marathon result. Have always insisted I wouldn't run the big mega events.
Five years ago running 1km outdoors was beyond any expectation, so this...

I think the penny has finally dropped: the reason I get these shivers and chills is low energy availability. I just need to eat more carbs.
It is difficult trying to find enough sources but I'll give it a go.

In a change to normally running fasted for early long runs, I tried having a homemade bagel with homemade peanut butter a couple hours before today's 17km effort.
Jury is still out on whether this would make for a race day strategy.

After last week's disaster with the fruit cake, I decided to give it another go but with half the ingredient amounts. And it worked a treat!

And equally humbled by the kind words of admiration from a club member. Genuine peer recognition is always appreciated and gives a boost to the overall effort.

I decided to put my demons aside and go along to the club tempo run and maybe have a good stretch of the legs. Turns out a couple of the others were up for it and we managed over 15 km of solid effort. Most fun I've had running in ages and certainly better than the endless ploddy efforts.

I guess there's a reason why I try not to get too excited about embarking on a new start only to see it all come crashing down within a few hours. Not having a fun day.

Was really looking forward to boosting my calorie intake with this healthy fruit cake, but despite the long cooking time upon slicing it was still liquid in the middle. Not feeling great about it going straight in the bin.

Have just finished this book, getting back on MyFitnessPal and seeing a one-day deficit of 1400 calories was a bit of an eye opener, so making a serious effort to eat more but still sticking to the same principles. Hopefully I'll start to see an improvement in my training in time for the next race.

A great start to the new year: the medal for my top-3 age grade placing in October's Ljubljana Marathon.
5 years ago this would have been unimaginable; I wasn't even thinking of running 100m outdoors. It will always rate as one of the happiest days of my entire life.

I actually managed to sleep through the extended round of fireworks last night. I must have needed the sleep.
No New Year resolutions but hope everyone can move forward to the best of their ability.

Starting the new year by hanging my son's 60th birthday present for me.
Don't really like seeing photos of myself but it's touching that he wants to keep a record of the achievement. It has started to sink in that it was a pretty decent effort, something to be proud of.

In a reflective mood at my son's house, deeply grateful for the incredible feat of laying on the Christmas lunch yesterday after the oven broke on Tuesday night.

Showing off the latest addition to the running shoe collection, the pinkies have spikes for track sessions. Can't wait to try them out.

It's sometimes hard to grasp how much impact a hard week at work can have on training. I love the Sunday posture drills because it is so relaxed but focused on the details and a chance to escape into a different type of effort.
A great mental reset and just what I needed today.

Hopefully yesterday's dark moments will be lifted after an afternoon drill and trace session.
I think I miss the marathon training, but it's so hard, and can't be done without an event on the horizon.
Perhaps it's that internal conflict I need and why I'm hooked on running.

Hit the wall on my run this afternoon and had to walk/jog the 2nd half of it. Legs are tired and hurting; I've lost the fight to find a balance between mental, physical and dietary demands of training. Not sure when I'll be ready to give it another go, but no longer gunning for a fast Feb HM.

Spirits somewhat lifted after Parkrun volunteering today. Still in my own dark running place but always good to see others out doing their thing and enjoying their Saturday morning.

Never normally manage to listen to many podcasts but really enjoying the #ukrunchat episodes with the community members especially when I have lost all motivation to train. Not sure I'll be able to get back into the full swing of things but great to listen to normal people's stories.

Looks like a Wordpress plugin has broken the auth of the site I recently built for the dining club. Really can't face having to hack around the sure too try and figure out what's wrong.
December 1, 2024 at 9:53 PM
Somehow managed to get through 21.1 km this morning, off-road and in the rain. Right hip is still sore but otherwise should be good to start half marathon training on Monday. An easy 8 km effort to start.
December 1, 2024 at 9:11 PM
I suspect training for a spring half marathon could be harder than an autumn marathon despite it not lasting as long and not being quite so punishing.
November 29, 2024 at 6:49 PM
Really struggled through a 10k run at lunchtime, probably because of the disrupted sleep this week.
Hoping I can get sorted out in time to start half marathon training on Monday. It'll be my first time following an actual HM plan.
November 29, 2024 at 6:46 PM
I suspect a lot of my attention this week will be in regard to how much my hopes hurt after the drills and exercises on Sunday. Have discovered a bunch of muscles I didn't know existed.
November 26, 2024 at 11:23 AM
I've created a bsky account for my running club, @sandhurstjoggers.bsky.social; I only really post club run details. I never had much of a problem with the other place, but then I only followed running accounts and that was always very positive and friendly, so no change really.
