I am a dude that is not a fan of bros.
A nerd who wishes he was a geek.
I enjoy suffering Wikipedia, craft beer, cameras, antiques, Nordic style social democracy, playing board games with my wife, and liking people who are cool with people being different.
Bowling Alone was more about social capital. The idea was that churches, synagogues, mosques, bowling leagues, bridge clubs, fraternal orders, and service clubs provided a much needed social network that helped society, men and women, not be lonely. It also provided purpose and community

It is an interesting read. I am part of an Odd Fellows lodge. The KoL had a similar officer setup, handshakes, and passwords.

Form the Knights of Labor ritual book?

Nice to see a picture of a local Odd Fellows lodge.

These types of organizations are better than what has replaced them. Over work. Too much time spent online listening to the wrong people.

I joined the Odd Fellows back in April this years. Many of the fraternal orders offer community service that isn’t all consuming of a person’s time like NGOs. They also offer social activities. I wanted this because of the darker times we live in and how powerless I have felt lately.

You bowed to a man who is using food to hold people hostage. His promise are lies.

The election last Tuesday is not only a wake up call for republicans…but also you. You, news media, and higher education institutions that bowed to the will of a fascism are contemptible.

The man that instigated the J6th Insurrection and the people who use hunger to hold Americans hostage will not honor any deal. SNAP will be gone. ACA will be gone. America will lose, because of your failure to fight against this threat. I regret voting for you as the Vice Presidential candidate.

Odd Fellows has the potential to grow. We really need to be a guild for the guildless. Rituals and tradition are our identity. Sharing a higher purpose, doing good for members, and the community should be the goal. That requires us to be more fraternal, diverse, and social.

My lodge said I could believe in anything as God even the sun. I was raised by Lutheran/Methodist parents, though we never went to church. My mom had been church out in her younger years. Glad your lodge is more inventive with the high power question.

This is what intrigues me about the Lynx in Lodge 49. They seem to understand fraternalism more so than modern orders. I love Odd Fellowship, but we can do fraternalism better.

I wish the IOOF would remove the requirement to believe in God to be an Odd Fellow. In order to be an Odd Fellow should be a common belief of a Higher Purpose or Principle, higher than ourselves.

Just some of my random thoughts as an Odd Fellow thinking about AMCs Lodge 49. Really wish we had gotten more seasons. The Lynx and the characters of the show seem to be more on my mind lately. If the Ancient Benevolent Order of the Lynx was real I would want to be a member.

All in all this would be a very interesting fraternal order in real life. The Lynx in Lodge 49 has a tavern, library, rooms for traveling knights, a secret room with the Orphic cosmic egg painted on the wall, and the Sanctum Sanctorum for the Sovereign Protector.

The Sovereign Protector-elect seems to be voted for by the lodge and then goes on a “Grand Tour” of other lodges around the world with him/her ending up at Lodge 1 where they hold an installation ceremony to become the Sovereign Protector of their Lodge.

The Majestic Knight seems to represent the future, the great journey toward achieving alchemical magnum opus.
November 9, 2025 at 4:10 PM
The Luminous Knights seems to represent the present, fellowship, and benevolence towards current members.
November 9, 2025 at 4:10 PM
The Solemn Knight seems to represent the past, tradition, and rituals.
November 9, 2025 at 4:10 PM
Lynx lodges seem to operate as a confederation. There is no Grand lodges or sovereign grand lodges. Lodge 1 seems to be the principle lodge as a first among equals which is very different from fraternal orders of today but seem to mimic early Odd Fellowship and Freemasons organization.

I suggest that while members of the lodge Royal Council like the Chamberlain, Astronomer, Constable, and Scribe are elected each term. The Sovereign Protector and head knights are elected then maintain a predetermined term of office through retention votes.

Lodge 49 shows the Sovereign Protector with the Solemn, Luminous, and Majestic Knights along with the Chamberlin of the Royal Council as the head of the lodge. In the pilot script of Lodge 49 there is mention of a Tetrarch. I feel the tetrarch is the chamberlain and the three head knights.
