The Belém do Pará Convention establishes that every woman has the right to a life free of violence, obligating States to act with due diligence to prevent, sanction, and eradicate this violence.

The right to live free from torture (Art. 5) and the right to equality and non-discrimination (Art. 2 and 7) are violated every time a woman or gender diverse person suffers gender-based violence.

A life free from violence (physical, sexual, economic, or political) is not a privilege: it is a fundamental and inalienable right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) .

The tragedy is compounded by systemic impunity. The failure to adequately investigate and prosecute these crimes as feminicides worldwide perpetuates the cycle of violence and the omission by authorities.

Every year, tens of thousands of women are intentionally killed. In 2024 alone, the UN estimated that over 83,000 women and girls were deliberately murdered, with most of these crimes being committed by partners or family members. They are not numbers, they are individuals who had a full life.
