He was in prison for 15 years for his crime before early release. Non citizen criminal convicts/prisoners have almost always been deported after serving their sentence.

It’s not automatic path to citizenship but it is an easier pathway for those who served. The issue here is this guy attempted to murder someone and then didn’t finish his citizenship application. Upon early release from prison, he was picked up by ICE.

There is nothing abnormal about that process.
