But the problem we all are facing, whether you are willing to acknowledge it or not, is a stage where facts don’t matter any longer, and whether you are in the business of managing money or in the “real” economy, this Orwellian world makes it exceedingly difficult to make decisions.

In 2024, Canada ran a trade deficit in total transportation equipment with the United States totaling -C$1.8 billion and has been running bilateral deficits in this sector in three of the past four years. Nobody in Canada is crying about it.

But you see, if you just continue to talk over and over again about how Canadians are ripping off the United States, you end up believing it (as the anchors do on FOX).

Over nearly two decades, motor vehicle production in the United States has actually increased at a +1.1% annual rate. In Canada, try -0.5%. Auto sector employment in the U.S. has hardly been great — eking out a +0.4% annualized increase. In Canada? How about -1.1%! Which country should be griping?
