Chapter 2: The Outside Evening sunlight pierced through the overgrown ferns, vines, and ivy that had overtaken the lab's exterior. Few rays of sunlight made it through the canopy, but the ones that did heated the concrete roof to great temperatures. The shady spots and air over the lab remained cool, and as Cael cooled down from her time inside, small water droplets condensed on her body. She noted, through an extensive knowledge of thermodynamics in her database, how much water would condense on her; she'd be safe, for now. As her exterior cooled, she gazed through the greenery at the lush ground below before pausing. Although she'd been perceiving it faintly for as long as she could remember, her sensors were now flooded with the almost familiar scent of damp earth, wood, and the sweet scent of decaying leaves. Her databanks offered only one classification: *forest*. After taking the surrounding scenery in, she gripped a low-hanging branch. It felt rough, coated in a thin, wet layer that dissipated at her touch. Cael calculated force, then distance. Her calculations were flawless, but still... "What if the foliage isn't as soft as it seems?" she thought. She re-ran the simulation. Her auditory sensors amplified every noise, checking for inaccuracies, and disturbances to her plan. One more sensor reading could make the difference. Three... "I don't see any branches in the way. Everything lines up." Two... "Only two or three dozen feet. Or four. It's fine. It looks pretty padded. Right? Right. That's padded." One... "Come on. It's fine. Here goes..." Zero. She launched herself down the side of the lab. The concrete left her feet in an instant. As she dashed through the air, Cael noted the gravitational forces exerted on her. Her calculations aligned with gravity's pull as she fell. She knew the trajectory she would take; but to actually *feel* the wind blowing past her face was... different! Then, a crunchy, nearly inaudible *thud*. She landed on the foliage below. Her servos were fine. They, along with the foliage, helped ease her landing--as she'd predicted. Although she simulated it three times over, the landing felt gentler than anticipated. The leaves below her felt soft, sticking ever so slightly to the bottom of her feet as she turned around. Looking back, the lab towered over Cael. Its scale, imperceivable from the roof, almost made her stumble. She stopped, wide-stanced, tilting her head. The lab was an imposing structure with its thick concrete walls. Different cubes mashed together at odd angles formed the main silhouette. Cael came from the one at the top. "That's what a building looks like," she thought, storing the new information within her database. Readjusting her auditory sensors, Cael heard the rustling of leaves all around her, the wind whistling past her, and a faint, strangely melodic chorus beyond the canopy. Branches moved and emitted an unfamiliar creaking noise. Each layer of sound ate away at the lab's intrinsic, almost infectious silence. She stopped to examine the lab wall, whirring as she found the threshold between the greenery and the concrete. A fern clung to the wall, not letting go even when Cael reached to peel it off. She saw that its leaves looked like a copy of its base and that the further she looked into the fern, the more repetition she found. Her eyes widening, Cael ran an analysis of its microscopic structure. For research. Her subroutines looped over and over, capturing every intricate detail of the leaf. After almost 10 minutes of unbroken staring at the fern, Cael continued on her way to the city. One step, then another. Each time she lifted her foot, a neat circular imprint of it remained, as if a compass traced it, stamped on the floor for a few seconds before gradually re-taking its shape like she was never there. It reminded her of the mold on the lab floor. For a fraction of a second, she wondered what made the soil so good at springing back up. As she kept walking, Cael noticed that with each step she kicked up a small particulate. Through her enhanced vision, she saw the near-microscopic dust dancing in the filtered sunlight, being pushed and pulled by the wind while falling. Some steps later, something along the dust *moved*. Something crystalline and alive flew out from the earth, its wings reflecting light directly into Cael's eyes. A small, iridescent moth, startled by the dust, spiraled around her head, its accelerated movements disturbing her sensors' readings. Cael cataloged everything she could about the moth, from the spots on its wings to the way its antennae bent. Her processors churned out simulations of the moth's movements, but every prediction failed. No statistical model could explain its erratic flight.

but here's the first chapter of a cute little story i'm doing

Rubble fell from the ceiling into a small room, the sound echoing between its walls. White walls and shiny floors made the room look sterile, except for a corner that had been carpeted with mold. Papers were scattered across the room, some pinned up on corkboards, others thrown on the floor. Various pieces of equipment hung on the walls and ceiling, the ones near the moldy corner already decaying into rust, feeding the overgrowth. A small robot—fully committed to getting the escape hatch opened—stood on boxes she’d placed methodically in the corner, reaching up to the ceiling. She pushed against the hatch, engaging all of her servos at once. High-pitched, mechanical whirring filled the room, overwhelming the stubborn creaking of the hatch. Then, with a satisfying pop, the door swung open. Blinding light overwhelmed her vision as she climbed out of the lab. She felt the temperature rising immediately, almost losing her balance while trying to stand up. She took a few minutes to adjust to seeing the far-away landscape. After months where the furthest thing away was ten feet away, any living creature would’ve turned near-sighted. Far up to the north, almost on the horizon, a city came into view. Even from so far away, it seemed eerily still. Thousands of lines of intricately balanced code activated in an instant within her, all wanting to do different things. A part of her wanted to explore her surroundings, and perhaps come back before sunset. Deep within her, however, subroutines warned her to stay near the lab, where things seemed to be safe. Fleeting impulses surfaced, like intrusive thoughts, telling her to walk off the roof simply for the experience—and the data it would provide. The wind whistled past her carrying the silence of the surrounding greenery, making the electrical buzz she emitted seem deafening by comparison. Through small pushes from every corner of her mind, their whispers rising in volume at an overwhelming pace, she fixed her eyes on the city. Though itself green with overgrowth, the city stood out against its green surroundings. It spiked her curiosity like nothing else around her did, so after standing around for a few minutes, she decided to venture out to it as soon as she could. Through the lab's hatch, she saw a sheet of paper, half taken by the overgrowth. She held onto the hatch's edge and climbed back in to retrieve the sheet. Peeling it off the floor, leaving behind an imprint of text on the moldy tile, she thought she’d need it later. She analyzed the paper once more before storing it in a small bin on her back, taking note that it was letter-sized and written in a language she hadn’t seen before. Her name was written on its border: “Cael.”
