I think that’s right there was an assumption Kings were anointed/enthroned by God. I thought it was an interesting idea to look at Lear’s relationship with the sacred over the course of the play and see if/how it changed. I haven’t read Richard II in awhile, but agree w/ you Lear is more relatable

In a way, maybe his experiences have turned Edgar into a poet or a playwright? I like your description “compassion disguised as deception”.
