(2/2) Certain groups at the time and to this day assume that it is some sort of documentary that should be required viewing. I can't decide if this is a mark of the success of the satire or the failure of us as human beings.

Unfortunately true.
I always find it amusing that people are confused about Starship Troopers the movie being a satire of the book by Robert Heinlein. Verhoeven has explicitly stated that it is a movie about (paraphrasing) 'fascists who are not aware of their own fascism' (1/2)
