On this day in 1982.

With the drivers having calling off their strike, qualifying took place for the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. René Arnoux (Renault RE30B) claimed pole position for the season-opener with a time of 1 min:06.351 sec.

OTD in 1982.

Qualifying for the South African GP didn't take place. The drivers were on strike in protest at newly introduced clauses in the F1 superlicence. The drivers spent the night on mattresses, locked into the conference room at Johannesburg's Sunnyside Park Hotel.

Remembering the brilliant Gilles Villeneuve, born on this day in 1950.

Villeneuve drove for McLaren (once) & Ferrari in 67 Grand Prix (winning 6) between 1977-1982. World Championship runner-up in 1979, Villeneuve was killed in an accident during final qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix.

Happy 71st birthday to aerodynamicist/engineer Jean-Claude Migeot.

An assistant engineer at Renault, Migeot joined Ferrari. He moved to Tyrrell, & along with Harvey Postlethwaite, designed the 018 & 019. He returned to Ferrari & would also work for Benetton & Minardi.

Happy birthday to former F1 driver & Team Ghinzani founder Piercarlo Ghinzani, 72 today.

European F3 Champion (1977) & Italian F3 Champion in 1979. Ghinzani entered 111 Grand Prix (starting 74) between 1981-1989. He finished 5th at Dallas in 1984, driving an Osella.

Remembering Pier Luigi Corbari, who passed away #OnThisDay 6 years ago.

Corbari was the sporting director of Alfa Romeo in endurance racing & later F1. He would become team manager of EuroBrun in 1989 & became a member of the FIA's F1 commission.

Happy birthday to ex- F1 & sports car driver David Kennedy, 71 today.

Runner-up in the 1979 Aurora AFX British F1 Series, Kennedy joined the ailing Shadow F1 team, failing to qualify for 7 GPs during 1980. He did start the Spanish GP, which had however lost its World Championship status.

Remembering Spirit Racing co-founder John Wickham, who passed away on this day last year.

Wickham oversaw Audi's 1996 BTCC title triumph & also Bentley's 2003 Le Mans victory.

Derek Daly achieved his best GP result, finishing 4th in a Tyrrell-Ford-009. Bruno Giacomelli was 5th in his Alfa Romeo 179, scoring his first points. Alain Prost brought his McLaren-Ford-M29B home in 6th place for a point on his GP debut.

A new decade of F1 action got underway with Alan Jones (Williams-Ford-FW07) winning the Argentine Grand Prix at Buenos Aires. Nelson Piquet (Brabham-Ford-BT49) & Keke Rosberg (Fittipaldi-Ford-F7) rounded off the podium finishers.

Happy birthday to Alan Rees, 86 today.

A co-founder of the March & Arrows F1 teams. Rees was a quick driver in Formula Junior & F2. He raced a works Cooper-Maserati to 9th at the 1967 British Grand Prix. Rees was team manager at Shadow, & later Arrows.

Jacques Laffite (Ligier-Ford-JS11/15) would join Jones on the front row (1 min:44.44 sec) for the race.

HappyBirthday to Emanuele Pirro, who turns 62 today.

A sports car ace with 5 Le Mans wins & 2 ALMS titles, Pirro competed in F1 from 1989-1991. Driving for Benetton & Scuderia Italia, his best finish was 5th at the 1989 Australian Grand Prix. Pirro also won titles in touring cars.

HappyBirthday to Eddie Cheever, 66 today.

Cheever took part in 132 Grand Prix (1978, 1980-1989) & finished on the podium 9 times.
After F1 he competed in CART, & the IRL, where he won the 1998 Indianapolis 500.
Cheever also won 9 times in sports cars, driving for Lancia & TWR Jaguar.

#HappyBirthday to South African F1 designer Rory Byrne, 80 today.

Byrne was chief designer at Toleman (1982-1985), Benetton (1986-1990 & 1992-1995) & Ferrari. (1997-2005). His designs won a total of 99 Grand Prix, 7 drivers' & 7 constructors' titles.

HappyBirthday to Pascal Fabre, who turns 64 today.

French F3 Championship runner-up in 1980, Fabre was a race winner in European F2 & International F3000.
He took part in 11 Grand Prix with AGS during 1987. His best results were 9th places at the French & British Grand Prix.

Remembering engine builder Brian Hart,10 years on from his passing aged 77.

Hart's V8, V10 & 4-cylinder turbo engines equipped a number of teams including Toleman, Arrows & Jordan. An able driver, Hart drove an F2 Protos at the 1967 German GP, finishing 12th.

In F1, Gabbiani drove for Surtees (1978) & Osella (1981). From 17 entries, Gabbiani started 3 Grand Prix, all with Osella.

#HappyBirthday to François Hesnault, 67 today.

Having finished runner-up in the 1983 French F3 Championship, Hesnault contested the '84 F1 season with Ligier, his best result 7th at Zandvoort.
He briefly drove for Brabham in '85 & drove a Renault camera car at the '85 German GP.

Happy birthday to F1 design genius Adrian Newey, 65 today.

Newey's creations have won 12 F1 Constructors' Championships, 13 Drivers' Championships & over 200 Grand Prix.

Remembering Philippe Streiff, a year on from his passing aged 67.

Streiff took part in 53 Grand Prix between 1984-1988 & drove for Renault, Ligier, Tyrrell & AGS. He finished 3rd at the 1985 Australian Grand Prix. Streiff was sadly left quadriplegic after an accident during 1989 pre-season testing.
