Slavery wasn't making them poor
They hated Yankees (nerdoid Anglo puritan moralfags) and the idea of Yankees telling them what to do, because they are belligerent Scots-Irish borderers that love fighting and dying. The slave owners knew they would lose and be dispossessed, the poor whites didn't care.

That's besides the point. You said that the slave owners 'convinced' the poor whites to fight for something that 'kept them poor'. That is categorically untrue.

The planter class was explicitly adamant about their intention not to go to war. Upward mobility was also considerably greater in the antebellum south (for poor whites that is). Have you ever read any book ever?
