Jonathan Harvey | Bird Concerto...

It's awfully quiet outside now that most of the birds are gone for the winter. And I enjoyed the chirping, whistling, singing and the rest of their noise. I spent at least half of the summer mornings with Harvey and the birds. Now it's just Harvey.

Karlheinz Stockhausen | Mantra
#NowListening

If my memory serves me right, this one is jazzier, more lyrical and Webernian than the Pestova/Meyer recording. A delight either way.

Andrea Tarrodi | String Quartets
#NowListening

Last week's discovery and also something suggested by an algorithm. Very, very good stuff.

Gérard Pesson | Blanc mérité
#NowListening

It is something that Spotify's algorithm suggested, and for once it was right. It is so different and fresh. So much fun. Instant purchase.

#NowListening

One piece for string quartet, two for string quintets (SQ plus double bass), and one for four string quartets.

Sarah Hennies | Motor Tapes
#NowListening

Over 90 minutes of contemporary classical music, which initially seemed uninteresting to me. Now I find it not only fascinating, but also one of the greatest discoveries/releases of the year.

Toshio Hosokawa | Orchestral Works
#NowListening #NewReleaseFriday

This is the fourth volume of the series and the fourth orchestra conducted by Jun Märkl that plays Hosokawa's music. This is not a complaint.

Marcin Tadeusz Łukaszewski | Piano etudes
#NowListening

I was looking for some recordings of Paweł Łukaszewski's piano music and found this. The discipline of Bach and the flamboyance of Rachmaninoff sprinkled with Ligeti's intensity. It's quite spectacular, I'd say.

Evening playlist:

Luciano Berio | Concerto for two pianos and orchestra

Michael Daugherty | UFO for solo percussion and orchestra

Stanisław Skrowaczewski | Musica a quattro

John Luther Adams • Darkness and Scattered Light
#NowListening

I'm in the mood for some double bass sounds, so it's time for something new. John Luther Adams' works for solo double bass and for five double basses. That looks exciting.

Luciano Berio • Coro
#NowListening

Perhaps not the best choice on a Saturday morning, or any morning actually, because it requires maximum concentration, but here it is. The choir, by the way, has an incredibly interesting and strong discography. So yeah, thank you BIS Records.

Seán Clancy • Four Sections of Music Unequally Divided
#NowListening

Gamelan, warm sound of analogue synthesisers, piano part that still reminds of Julius Eastman's music... Fabulous album.

Brian Ferneyhough • Sonatas for String Quartet
Samuel Barber • String Quartet in B minor
June 11, 2024 at 6:05 PM
NeoQuartet • String Theory
#NowListening

This is interesting. NeoQuartet in their own repertoire played on electric instruments. The music is minimalistic, cosmic, rough/lush/soaring ambient with an experimental twist. Tangerine Dream comes to mind here and there. More, please.
June 11, 2024 at 8:13 AM
Pēteris Vasks • String Quartets 1-3
#NowListening

I like the intensity of the First SQ and the warmth and playfulness of the Second. The disc spent nearly fifteen years on the shelf completely ignored and suddenly it turns out that I quite like this music. Hmm...

I think I have never heard this much light, hope, and generally spring in Messiaen's Quartet before. If I had to have a favourite recording of it, this would be the one.
June 5, 2024 at 7:25 AM
This music is so elegant, lyrical, and calm, even though there's tension. It's rather introverted, but neither shy nor withdrawn, if it makes sense. What strikes me the most, however, is that it sounds as if Bainbridge felt and meant every note that's in the score. Remarkable.
May 30, 2024 at 3:11 PM
Early morning with Lutosławski's behemoth and Mykietyn's spectrally melodic or melodically spectral adventures. That almost electronically sounding singing/whistling motif at the end of the piece, an earworm, is astonishing.
May 30, 2024 at 4:29 AM
Daron Hagen • Heike Quinto

Heike Quinto, a medieval Japanese chronicle, set to not exactly Japanese music. It is actually koto that creates and completes that illusion. And I don't mind if it's just a stylisation, because I like what I hear. It's an interesting chamber "opera".
May 29, 2024 at 5:25 AM
Piotr Kurek • Smartwoods

I like this mix of acoustic and electric sounds, tiny melodic motifs, summer vibe, and a dream-like atmosphere. It all seems to be written and improvised at the same time. Wonderful music.

PS Is ambient jazz a thing?...

Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa turns 75 today. People started singing their praises last week stressing how important and respected figure she has been in the past 50 years. And yet, somehow, this is her first portrait album. How many live recordings of her music are locked and hidden...
