This rare fritillary is endemic to California.This particular specimen and its neighbors were found growing creekside in chaparral shade nestled in serpentine barrens, in an arid and unforgiving habitat.

Often blooming in late winter or early spring, this visually striking flower has an unpleasant scent. Which makes sense as it’s pollinated by fungus gnats.

Trillium ovatum

Loc: Mt. Tamalpais
This is one of the most widely distributed trillium of the PNW. It’s specific epithet—ovatum—means egg shaped and refers to its petals, which unlike eggs, turn pink as they age.
