"The law" is an overloaded term. It can, as you note, be used by US lawyers to refer to a specific statute. However, w/o a specific reference to a statute, it is used to refer to the entirety of all legal resources that define relevant rights and obligations, the majority of which is case law.

This is also how it used to work in Spain. People would put up signs to mark their buildings as insured and sometimes get creative with their placement to pay one fee and place it between 2 connected buildings. english.elpais.com/verne/2020-0...

I'm guessing it's going to go by communities. The legal folks from the bird app seem to be here. The sports folks, not so much (yet).
