He/they/she

I love art, literature, movies, and music
The book talks about this experience in a bit of depth. His struggles with depression were harder and harder as the years progressed, he published many more novels before his death in 1948 where he downed alongside his mistress.

He tried commiting once more around 1930 and failed, this resulted in his addiction to painkillers and was eventually taken to a psychiatric facility for recovery.

He was able to not suffer any legal reproductions due to his family's intervention. He continued writing afterwards and experimented with an autobiographical style.

Shortly after, he took another attempt on his life, this time with a woman he met at a bar. They jumped off a bridge and the woman passed but he did not.

It obviously failed and he graduated that same year. He then wanted to French literature at Tokyo imperial University but was kicked out missing classes.

Dazai then went to study literature but lost all interest when his favorite author, Ryuunosuke Akuta, passed via suicide. After, his self destructive behaviors took action. He spent all money on alcohol and sex workers and after 2 years, attempted suicide for the first time.

He grew up in a fairly wealthy and large family similar to Yozo, Dazais father was one of the richest land owners and as a result became a politician in Japans house of peers (though this put a strain on their relationship and he eventually passed once Dazai entered Highschool).

-this book strongly reflects the life of Dazai himself.

This book helps shine light on different perspectives, specifically a perspective of someone who cannot understand the concept. Not everyone can relate to his experience but the disconnection he feels is a very widespread experience.

‘What does it mean to be human’ is a very broad, subjective question. Answers will differ from person to person and there will never be a complete, true answer.
December 19, 2024 at 2:16 PM
Yozo commits these self destructive acts fully knowing he's only making it worse for himself, he has no expectations so he doesn't even bother to change the trajectory of his life. It sucks and that's just how it is.
December 19, 2024 at 2:16 PM
His view on the world is now completely disoriented (? )He sees no hope. (Expects nothing good to occur for him, has no expectations at all really)
December 19, 2024 at 2:14 PM
It's a major thing for him, so much so that he never even tells anyone about the crimes against him. “I could have complained about their crime to somebody, but even after speaking out, I would have likely just been argued down by someone using excuses the world would approve of.”
December 19, 2024 at 2:13 PM
He does not trust humans. This is because he's seen how people fake their true thoughts and feelings In front of others, his distrust is further amplified by the sexual abuse he experienced from maids and servants.

Story makes the reader question what it even means to be human in the first place (I personally believe to be human means to experience the pain that comes with living)
December 19, 2024 at 2:13 PM
It is startling to consider such situations, but at the same time, they are incredibly realistic. This perspective offers a disturbing yet truthful view of society. This complexity is what makes the book so profound
December 19, 2024 at 2:11 PM
It becomes difficult to empathize with the man he ultimately becomes. His views towards women are misogynistic, as he believes they are inferior, even going so far as to stand by while they are assaulted. He cheats, steals, and exploits the women who love him.
December 19, 2024 at 2:11 PM
As we read, we find ourselves conflicted about sympathizing with Yozo. He has faced significant hardships and struggles, but his actions later in life reveal that he is not a good person.
December 19, 2024 at 2:10 PM
He turns to alcohol, women, and self-doubt as ways to numb the pain of his existence, but these fleeting escapes only deepen his sense of disillusionment and worthlessness.
December 19, 2024 at 2:10 PM
As he gets older, his inability to conform to societal expectations leads to a series of personal failures, from strained relationships to his incredibly destructive behavior and suicidal tendencies.
December 19, 2024 at 2:10 PM
He feels empty and alienated, not understanding others or how to connect to them. This alienation is present throughout his entire life, even in early childhood where he feels emotionally distant from his family.
December 19, 2024 at 2:09 PM
No Longer Human is about the human condition and despair, portraying psychological deterioration and existential crisis. Yozo struggles to understand his humanity, he feels like he cannot possibly be a true human if he does not experience life as everyone else does.
December 19, 2024 at 2:09 PM
In doing so, he can navigate social situations without revealing true thoughts and feelings of despair (kinda like masking?) “I can barely hold a conversation with those around me, because I don’t know what’s acceptable to say or how to say it. Therefore, I tried to reinvent myself as a
clown.”
December 19, 2024 at 2:07 PM
-Took the role of a clown, always made it his goal to make people laugh since he fears society lashing out at him if acted un-accordingly.
