Thrilled and honored that my book Religion for Realists was given the 2025 Distinguished Book Award by @sssreligion.bsky.social last night.

It’s vital that we understand religion and religious people. The social sciences are remiss to ignore either.

Hire more religion specialists.

Darci is a gem for sure.

Thank goodness the other Dr. Perry and I have different middle initials! Sadly I feel that the confusion is probably worse for him. I've only received compliments on his articles, but I fear he gets some misdirected hate mail.

This is Samuel P. Perry, scholar of rhetoric in the Interdisciplinary Core at Baylor. Also an expert in political rhetoric and race among the Christian Right. We've actually had dinner together! We gotta work on a co-authorship someday just to blow people's minds!

About every 2-3 weeks since June I get an email saying "Nice article on Hegseth's Christian nationalism in @theconversation.com!" But this was written by *another* Samuel Perry who studies religion & right-wing politics (crazy, right?). He's at Baylor; great dude.

What is CREC? The Christian nationalist group has a vision for America − and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s support
The Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches, or the CREC, has a highly patriarchal and conservative interpretation of Scripture.

My wife read this book recently and even watched a live webinar interview with Barrett talking about the book. This was her assessment as well. Barrett tries so hard to portray SCOTUS as above politics it starts to sound like politics itself.
@mgraber1.bsky.social reviews Justice Barrett’s book:
“By presenting judging as a realm of pure law, insulated from politics, the justices offer a picture so implausible that it makes the opposite claim—that judging is nothing but politics—more credible.”
Justice Barrett’s Campaign Biography
Amy Coney Barrett’s book, "Listening to the Law," claims the Supreme Court is above politics. Its very existence proves otherwise.

Thanks Larisa!

Even if folks think this about religion, the dismissive mocking attitude toward *studying* religion is part of the problem. Love it or hate it, religion matters A LOT and isn’t going away anytime soon.

🙏 thanks!

Love it when journals let me see other reviewers' reviews immediately after I submit my own review. Sure, I usually get to see them eventually when editors render a decision, but it's better when the manuscript is fresh in mind. Most often it's affirming, but I also like to know when I missed stuff.

My daughter did exactly this with all her candy and my two boys just stacked piles.

Tailgating is awesome. With the exception of binge drinking (which I think is actually pretty rare), it's such a great cultural phenomenon that we do that. Friends and strangers eating great food, playing, laughing, uniting over common fandom. Beautiful really.

Yes! Several of the students mentioned empathy as a characteristic of positive masculinity!

Nobody expressed that would be weak or feminine. Other characteristics were: emotional intelligence, protecting, not insecure, good dads.

Takeaway for me was that young people were eager to consider positive messages about masculinity and thoughtful leaders need to be better at putting forward a constructive vision or it’ll be manosphere YouTubers and authoritarian politicians.

Everyone could identify what “toxic masculinity” looked like, but it challenged students in a good way to consider the possibility of “positive masculinity.” In what ways might it be different from femininity, what it might look like at all, and what would need to change for that to be normalized.
