This is Robert Smalls. He’s 1 of my favorites. We grew up in the same place & he stole a Confederate ship! He took his family & 12 others to safety. He was a Civil War hero & became the 1st Black to captain a ship in the U.S. service. He was elected to Congress in 1875.

I hope people see this movie, for Fernanda Torres’s surprise Globes winning-performance but also for the heart and soul of what it says about governments trying to erase the past.
