Well said. ‘Optional extras’ are the wrong way to deal with inequality. Children who would most benefit from Forest schools and healthy meals are more likely to miss out if ‘optional’ and it goes against the EY ethos of inclusivity. Just fund us properly!!
I wanted to do a thread to explain why the DfE making consumables charges voluntary, as per this new guidance, is going to be so problematic for the early years sector. It has the potential to make settings unsustainable especially in areas of high disadvantage. 🧵⬇️

I’m struggling to express how angry this makes me. Expecting us to have a group of children eating packed lunches while others have freshly prepared hot meals shows how determined the govt is to entrench inequality in early years provision 😠😢

No surprise - but please note that we already have not-for-profit social enterprises in the sector that would welcome support!

My jaw hit the floor when I heard about Gaie Delap's case. A 77-year old peaceful climate protester threatened with being returned to jail...because they can't find a tag small enough for her wrists.

As her MP, I have written to the prisons minister Lord Timpson.

This is no surprise. Schools in areas with populations of young children are often over-subscribed already (so have no space). Schools with empty classrooms are usually in areas where there are less young children. It’s not rocket science.
