"Ashley." Ash began to cry; tears of relief spilled from her eyes as her pack fell forgotten, and she rushed toward that strange man whose eyes knew exactly what they saw. In the backdrop, two shadows hued in twilight rainbow auras crashed into each other. "Orion." One of the shadows buried its head into the other's chest, and muttered so strongly between sobs: "I never thought someone would say my name again."

Rereading A Wrinkle in Time as an adult for the first time. As a frequently banned book, it must be good!

2 pages in, and I already know the protagonist, her family structure, her social class, and her anxieties. This is the kind of artful density I try to write.

I love worldbuilding through dialogue. Just from this, I know:

"delves" are some sort of mystic action / journey / vision

"cycles" are timekeeping

"g'anx" is some kind of produce

Character relationships: POV is more experienced, guiding a seemingly junior female

Sprinkle of humor--not stinking

Big announcement: I've completed my final (for now) polished draft of Six Stars, an 85,000 word SFF novel about family, trauma, and the price of transformation. Feels surreal.
