The first house martins of the year yesterday over our house and today I saw the first swallow of the year near Thursford.

Finished reading Isaac Deutscher's interesting biography of Stalin; I'm now 3 chapters into Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and its confusing genealogy!

I'm reading James Henry's Blackwater, set in Colchester and Essex in the early 1980's, when I was in my early 20's. Great fun so far.

I'm stunned by the announcement from the megalomaniac man-baby legitimising ethnic cleansing. How can 70 million people elect a deranged lunatic?

Well those aren't achievements they are mostly aspirations. They are implementing cuts of 2.5%, austerity yet again on neo con terms. I voted Labour, tactically, to unseat a pointless Tory and have done most of my life but I'm a Green and they have some very good solutions which Labour doesn't.

Same old lies from people like you. Same playbook as Trump and Putin.

Of course Labour could try being less useless! Done nothing about the water companies pumping raw sewage into our water, caved in to the gambling industry and why not a windfall tax on energy companies? Still locking up climate activists whilst those responsible for Grenfell are unpunished.

How about Rees-Smug saying cheaper food. A big lie. Brexit has made ordinary people poorer, destroyed young people's opportunities in Europe and hit our exports. Sold on lies and bigotry to benefit the rich.

I've just finished The Mirror and the Light, the final instalment of Hilary Mantel's trilogy. For me it was the most challenging of the three (child's play compared with Finnegan's Wake) but had some stunning prose, especially Cromwell's arrest.

On the final stretch of the last in the trilogy of Hilary Mantel's chronicle of Thomas Cromwell The Mirror and the Light, page 788 of 875. Phew!
