Prisons were not used as government-issued punishment until 1865. When the 13th Amendment of the US Constitution reformed slavery to only being legal as punishment for a crime, the $3.5 Billion dollar US slave industry changed into the now $10.5 Billion dollar prison industry (estimates).

I think the irony of this administration trying to hush conversations about gender and race is that it may inadvertently push conversations toward class, which I think can be far more damning for the administration and—I hope—even more beneficial for the layperson and the working class.
