Sly cooper piece still in the works.

I've been going through some style changes, and I'm wondering:
how y'all feel about more "sketchier" "bristly" illustrations?

sorry for the random tangent, you just make an excellent comment that I got me thinking more critically about my art style, and what choices to make.

so Thank you for the reply <3

Artist that are really good at balancing weight and contrast between subjects amongst an explosion of energy.

creating deliberate harmony within deliberate chaos. thats where I'm trying to get to.

rn I'm mainly taking inspiration from impressionist and cubist like Basquiat, and Jacob Lawrence

along with illustrator artist like Yoji Shinkawa, Ayami Kojima, Henry Yan, and Nagabe

I don't think this piece will be as "messy" by the end.
A good clear image is important for illustration like this.

I never want to jeopardize that for any reason

I'm just trying to find a good balance, that feels right.

But as a design choice: I just want to get rid of that "sterilized" "safe" feeling with my work, as my older works felt too "smooth"

I think that's the main goal for me, if that makes any sense?

keep the strengths of my rendered style (eg. highlights and rim lighting) but improve on the weaknesses

On a technical level, I still want to focus heavily on capturing good value control, color harmony, construction and composition of spaces, as those are fundamental properties for a solid painting.

I believe I understand what your saying, if you can show me a visual example, I think that would also be useful

When it comes to the sketchier look, I think its more so about keeping the movement, without smoothing out every mark I made with a texture-less brush, like an airbrush or softbrush.

cause I still I find that, I get a bit anxious when I actively choose to slow down, and not work till I burnout.

so, I'm interested in learning how others manage their workload throughout the day.

that's honestly something I'm practicing more of recently: taking breaks lmao!

quick question, if u don't mind: how many breaks do you take while working on a piece? for how long?

Are your breaks: just working on something else?
or do you just stop working completely for the time?
January 16, 2026 at 2:50 AM
lol happy to hear that!

lmao, i'm guessing that means you're liking it?

but outside of that, a 33% zoom and greyscale check is generally effective for a 1 person review, I agree
January 16, 2026 at 2:37 AM
The best I got rn: is to show the piece to others and simply ask them "what they see", or "who they see", without explaining everything to them.

If their answer is not what I was expecting, then that will give me a good idea that piece isn't reading well, yet.
January 16, 2026 at 2:37 AM
much appreciate the solid advice,
but also, sometimes I don't trust my eyes, lol

Sometimes, I feel like the piece may make sense to me, because I've been staring at it for hours,

but that doesn't always mean my review of my work is good...if that makes sense.
