We can only speculate why the custodian of the Collegium of Augustales was alone in bed at the time the pyroclastic flow swept over Herculaneum on that fateful day in 79AD.

We know little about Caecilia Metella—just her powerful family and this vast tomb on the Via Appia (30–10 BC). Wife of Crassus’ son, mother to another, she may have outlived them and built this herself. Power echoes in stone.

The Decumanus Maximus—once Herculaneum’s bustling heart—now rests at the edge of the dig. This March 2025 shot from above shows just how deep the ancient town lies.

Rare look inside the Sarno Baths at Pompeii—thanks to Felicia of Pompei Tour! These frescoes, from the women’s section, surround a small pool in a secluded, now-restoring site. That vivid blue really pops.

Beautifully delicate fresco of a woman holding a torch. Possibly depicting Demeter, often shown holding a torch as she searched for her daughter Persephone in the darkness.

This lovely wall painting adorns the Villa San Marco at Stabiae.

“Send your Legate to Ostia, O Caesar… you’ll find him in some big cookshop!” —Juvenal, Satire 8

This thermopolium in Ostia Antica—like a Roman fast-food joint—served hot meals to those without kitchens. Scorned by elites, essential for everyday life.

On Herculaneum’s Decumanus Maximus stands the House of the Bicentenary, once home to Gaius Petronius and Calactoria Themis. Its atrium features a marble impluvium and faded frescoes—echoes of Roman luxury.

The “Temple of Mercury” in Baiae near Naples; part of the leasure and bathing complexes that were so popular here in the late republican and Imperial Roman period. This structure features a 21.5m concrete dome that remains intact today. Taken March 2024. #romanhistory #dome #yourhistoryguide #baiae

A memory from 10 years ago—standing in the western palaestra of the Baths of Caracalla, looking through an exedra toward the tepidarium. These vast 3rd-century ruins still speak of Rome’s imperial scale and public life.

Clinging to a volcanic crater, the ruins of Roman Baiae reveal a luxurious past. Upper terraces rise above ground; the lower town, including an imperial villa, lies submerged beneath the sea. Excavations continue to uncover its hidden splendor.

The House of the Tuscan Colonnade at Herculaneum just reopened when I visited in March. Damaged by Vesuvius and Bourbon tunnels, it’s been painstakingly restored. A rare glimpse of a grand 2nd c. BC home.

North of the arena in Pompeii lies a walled vineyard once called the Foro Boario. Excavations revealed 2,000+ vine cavities; proof of winemaking, tasting, and even meals served on site. A perfect end to a day at the games!

Posted earlier on Nîmes’ Castellum Divisorium, here is what helped feed it: the Pont du Gard. Built mid-1st c. AD, nearly 50m high, 275m long—part of the same aqueduct system. Breathtaking Roman engineering.

Tucked away in Nîmes (France) is the Castellum Divisorium—the endpoint of a Roman aqueduct that carried water nearly 50 km via the Pont du Gard. A quiet but vital reminder of how Roman engineering sustained ancient cities.

The Round Hall of the Baths of the Seven Sages at Ostia Antica near Rome. Once topped by a cupola, this must have been an amazing space in its heyday … and what a mosaic to feature for “Tesserae Tuesday” 🙂
