Unfortunately I don't have a particularly good answer either, MOBAS and BRs are complicated and beginner unfriendly but they hit mainstream by some miracle and now everyone plays them
Hell, fighting games were in their place at some point! But then they fell off and simply didn't recoup the throne

I don't even particularly buy this since, when all else fails, you can simply blame the opponent in a fighting game or feel bad about dragging your team down if you're a more honest person in a shooter (which, in a world of lengthy, committal 4v4 to 6v6 shooter games, is a very real possibility)
