Mario, Luigi and Gary also has a potential gay romance subplot which Gary became involved with Stanley, a cousin of the Mario Bros (Stanley is canon, just very obscure.)

Roughly around 2014 or so, I created a Mario fan game. It was titled “Mario, Luigi and Gary.”
It was a ‘full length’ game with an original character, who was dumped into the Mushroom Kingdom. The plot was of him working alongside Mario and friends to save that world from a powerful evil.
