the difference between the lion king and hamlet is that in the lion king the jester is still alive
Why do I always get what I want?

In the long run, I mean; I am generally the happiest person at my work, which is already a pretty happy wholesome place, and it would be easy to think I’m just lucky; but I don’t think I am, or at least don’t think that’s it

A thing I was thinking about yesterday: why are so many people loyal to me? There are probably about 50 non-family people who would take a bullet for me, not counting those who would just do it for anyone

More than that: I have a cultlike authority in the ministry I lead that makes me uncomfortable

couldn’t agree more, had to reskype
There is one act which is to be punishable by death in the new regime which is that of proposing dumb words to be the way we refer to posts

A riddle to bless the timeline! Might start to make this a regular thing; if you have favorite beautiful riddles, leave one in the comments!

This one is from Richard Wilbur, a favorite poet of mine, and is a beautiful poem in its own right, beside being an excellent riddle:

yissss

This is the poem I read at my wedding

I wrote it myself three days before

And then my father in law got up and sang a beautiful song about giving his daughter away and everyone forgot my poem 😂

Social minds (economies, cultures, nations, even evolution) are embodied in conglomerates of brains, and function roughly at the dog level—they’re beasts to be tamed or trained or befriended, not really capable of self conscious imaginative self editing
Human: imagined experience (or imagined person’s response) adjusts reaction

My guess: we’ll see weird things with AI over the next century and it will all be very exciting, but no human type minds will emerge until we understand how human type brains do their thing better

everyone shut up, I figured out how minds work

Bateson was right all along

Amoeba: reacts to simple stimulus (if a then x)
Worm: reacts to complex stimulus (if a and b then y)
Fish: capacity for negative feed back; experience adjusts reaction
Dog: pack response adjusts reaction

move to use only cloud/atmospheric language for bluesky stuff

I first nominate that tweets/skeets/bloots/posts be referred to as vapors, in the Ecclesiastes sense

This has two advantages

First, we can once again say “I have the vapors”

Second, when I open this app I’ll say “all is vapor”

I like this

Blue sky implies daytime, but cloud formation doesn’t really work… “welcome to the Nimbus”
welcome to The Constellation
Look it's clearly TPOTS (This Part of The Sky) -- also known as a Constellation (officially!)

I like this

Mine:

feature not bug!
have you prayed about it?
what do you actually want?
prototype it
are you happy?
I’m right about this
what’s up handsome
hate to see it
Hmm summary of my sayings..
- befriend your sadness
- do life experiments
- the path will materialize as you go down it (? This is new)
- what’s up late night crew

Gregory Bateson has thing where he emphasizes “patterns that last longer than other patterns outlast other patterns”

I think a lot about that recently—how to build patterns that outlast what seems to me to be a rapidly disappearing world order

this is beautiful
Remembering living on the upper east side of manhattan, hanging out with my recently-moved-from-hawaii girlfriend. We just went to the met and she saw snow for the first time as we left. We're smoking cigarettes inside, ashing in a glass, and laughing about dumb things people say

I got the “yorick” username on bluesky! preeeetty big deal

The “yorick” name was always meant to be a play on the jester figures in hamlet (yorick), lion king (rafiki) and a little bit infinite jest (Don Gately, I think); but I worry that @meekaale.bsky.social’s cool new AI art avi obscures that
