With a backdrop of the Rocky Mountain foothills and endless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, spending a few days in this region, just 45 minutes south of Denver, is a joy. Pagosa Springs, Colorado is a small mountain town with a lot to offer: gorgeous scenery, a rich history, and an outdoor-focused, relaxed vibe. The town's claim to fame is, without question, the abundance of hot springs. The “Mother Spring” in Pagosa is the deepest known geothermal hot spring in the world, reaching up to 144 degrees at the source! The actual depth isn't even known.

Lyon is France's third-largest city (after Paris and Marseille), and has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It was an important city in the Roman Empire, then known as Lugdunum. This picturesque, elegant city is situated around two rivers: the Rhône and the Saône (they rhyme). An array of clean, easy-to-use public transportation options whisk visitors from one side of the city to the other.

The North Shore of Minnesota, along Lake Superior, is a spectacular destination, boasting scores of hiking opportunities just off scenic Highway 61. With mountains on one side of the highway and a nearly ocean-sized Great Lake on the other, these hikes are a real treat. Lake Superior is called the Gitchi-Gami by the Ojibwa people, who have lived near it since at least the 1600s.

If you're lucky, you'll go to Paris once in your life. If you're truly blessed, you'll experience the joy of returning. First-time visitors, as it should be, visit the most famous sites: the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, Musée de l'Orangerie, Champs-Élysées, Musée d'Orsay, Notre-Dame, and Versailles, for instance. First visits are often a frantic rush to see as much as possible.

New York City, specifically Manhattan, is a lot. Broadway, dozens of world-class museums, Central Park, the incredible neighborhoods, abundant history, incredible architecture, glorious food, endless shopping, and more. It offers enough to fill weeks or more. But there is a tradeoff - the traffic, the hectic pace, the impossible crowds, and the high cost of lodging. We love New York! But 3 days at a time is just about all these two Midwesterners can handle.

Charming Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and is located at the southern tip of Vancouver Island (not to be confused with the City of Vancouver). The saying goes that “Victoria is more British than Britain itself”. While there are definitely flavors of Britain at nearly every turn, Victoria has also claimed an atmosphere and culture of its own and it is an absolute delight to visit.

Though Des Moines is just a mid-sized city in the Midwest, it punches well above its weight in the food department. With about 28 restaurants per 10,000 people, Des Moines is in the same league as foodie cities such as San Francisco and Chicago. Just stick around for a few days. You'll eat well - without coming anywhere near a stereotypical fried pork tenderloin or anything on a stick.

An appealing port city on the southeast shore of Lake Superior (popularly referred to by its Ojibwe Tribe name Gitche Gumee), Duluth is overflowing with natural beauty, rich history, and abundant outdoor recreation. It is a year-round destination but is most popular in the summer and fall. However, visiting Duluth in the winter is a special experience, with stunning landscapes of snow and ice, a wide variety of outdoor (and indoor) adventures, and blissfully few crowds.
