We work for a sustainable future of the Mediterranean Sea 🌊
Pioneering new ways to protect nature and the people who depend on it.
📢World Whale Day!
These gentle giants also call the #Mediterranean home.
🐋 #Finwhales and #spermwhales are extraordinary mammals, essential to ocean balance and indicators of its health. Today their survival is at risk. Protecting whales means defending Mediterranean biodiversity. 💙

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day 💕
Did you know that #love exists #underwater too?

Seahorses (Hippocampus hippocampus) dance together, hold tails, and the male carries the eggs until they hatch.

But they are threatened by destructive fishing, trade and climate change.

Do you know that corals are animals?
🪸 Related to jellyfish, they live in colonies of tiny polyps, sometimes with symbiotic algae. Found in the #Mediterranean, they provide habitats and protect coastlines but face pollution, fishing, and warming seas. Protecting them is vital. 💙🌍

🫁 Did you know the #Mediterranean Sea has a green lung?
🌿 #Posidonia oceanica is an ancient marine plant that forms underwater #meadows, producing oxygen and hosting marine life. Today it’s threatened by trawling, anchoring and pollution.

A historic moment for our ocean & the Mediterranean 🌊 The High Seas Treaty enters into force, protecting high seas areas, including the Mediterranean.
WWF urges all countries to ratify & act—connected MPAs are essential.
🌍 A healthy Mediterranean is possible!

Do you know how many people live around the Mediterranean?
The Mediterranean is home to around 450 million people.
🐠This sea isn’t just a hub for human connection, it’s also home to over 17,000 marine species.

Tourism and fisheries are pillars of the Mediterranean economy — but unmanaged waste turns them into major sources of plastic leakage 🏖️🎣.
Plastic Smart Ports works with fishers, marinas, hotels and local businesses to remove plastics and promote reusable systems. Cleaner ports = cleaner seas 🌊.
December 21, 2025 at 11:02 PM
Ports are vital hubs for tourism, fisheries and shipping, but also hotspots for plastic leakage.
With Plastic Smart Ports, we promote circular, low-leakage models: less single-use plastic, better waste systems, refill stations, reusable solutions and responsible gear management.

Preventing, avoiding and mitigating.
With #NETTAG+, WWF Mediterranean works with fishers and ports to improve lost-gear recovery and understand how dismissed gear is managed on land — revealing gaps and helping strengthen waste-management systems across the Mediterranean.

Ghost gear is a deadly threat to Mediterranean wildlife 🕸️🐬🐢.
Lost nets keep trapping animals long after they drift away.
NETTAG+ works with fishers, scientists and NGOs to prevent gear loss and enable fast recovery through smart tracking and acoustic tags.

Marine pollution is a systemic challenge ♻️ involving agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries, tourism, transport, plastics and waste.
#BlueMissionMed works across all seven sectors to cut leakage and scale circular solutions.
A resilient Mediterranean needs coordinated action.

The Mediterranean covers <1% of global oceans but holds 7.5% of marine biodiversity 🌍. Yet it’s under growing pressure from traffic, tourism and plastic pollution.
#BlueMissionMed works to cut marine litter by 50% by 2030 and build a zero-pollution future for our sea 💙

🌊 On Mediterranean Day, WWF welcomes GFCM’s SoMFi 2025: fishing pressure down 50%, sustainable stocks doubled, biomass +25%. But 52% of stocks are still overexploited, bycatch is high, and marine litter grows.
We must keep up the momentum!
