I’m of the opposite view and think they’re mostly unnecessary. I’d rather see innovative mechanics to make the experience of playing these types of games simpler or more interesting than just rehashing the same old thing. I stopped playing D&D in 1980 so I’m bemused why anybody wants them now.

Do GMs just read the text from a module to their players? I suppose that never occurred to me. The few times I’ve run a module I’d never read the text verbatim : that was just a guide for me as GM.

I don’t know how anyone can play D&D 4th edition or Pathfinder or any of those cumbersome games. You’ve designed some nice, rules light games, those are worth a read.
