"Diary of a Madman" is one of the most influential albums of my life. One of those albums that, looking back, I know shaped me... and I still listen to it quite often.

Here's how I tried to capture it in my 2018 novel "Penny Harper" (as Jack Beltane)...

The other night, Tobie said, ‘Jack, if you didn’t already share his worldview, he would have scared you too much to listen to him’.” “That girl’s a genius.” We clinked bottles in a toast to Tobie. “There’s a reason I still listen to Diary of a Madman, Niz. It comforts me to know I’m not the only one who wonders if they're insane, who wants all the fucking pressure of our fucking society to just leave him the fuck alone. Yeah, sure, I was an outsider, but that doesn’t mean I wanted to be an outsider. It’s just how I am.” ‘“Okay—but he was also a millionaire drug addict when he said that shit, Bells. He didn’t have to care.” “Doesn't matter. Cuz think about it, man—the albums I’ve carried through my whole life, from middle school to now, tell a story: Theatre of Pain, Diary of a Madman, The Last In Line... That’s how I think, all the fucking time.” I held up a hand to stop him intermpting. “I’m fine with where I am—I love my life. I love Tobie. I love my kids. But I still feel like an outsider. It’s like, I want to be part of the world, but not on their terms, and that’s not how it works, and it drives me fucking nuts.”
