Sending out a friendly ‘Coo-eee!’ to all the mediators, conciliators, peacemakers, ADR program designers, collaborative thinkers, and post-lawyers in the woods or on the web.

If you’re exploring new paths in conflict resolution, let’s find each other.

This is the first of 3 posts in which I reflect on the place of #friendship in #mediation.

I start with a retelling of the well-known teaching story, "The 17 Camels". In my version there are only 15 camels. What flows from that we'll discuss in my next post.

I wonder if, beyond the politics of Left or Right, we are actually starting to see the emergence of a new politics of Affordability and whether that might be the real significance of the NYC Mayoral race.

If so, how far might those ripples extend?

What can fairy tales tell us about mediation? In this Field Note, I reflect on Vigen Gourian’s exposition of Margery Williams’ "The Velveteen Rabbit, or How Toys Become Real" and sketch out some connections to mediation as a practice of integrative peacemaking.

Lately, I've been reflecting on my #DisputeResolution work as something closely related to #LearningDesign, allowing us to bring the human dimensions of a dispute to light and to create space for collaborative and care-full attentiveness, response, and redress.

It's not easy to model the trust expected of others when drafting an invitation to negotiate. Often, it goes against instinct and training. It might also set up the need for an internal negotiation with your own client.

Thinking, this week, about how we can build and nurture the #StructuredNegotiation mindset. As learning designers, we’d like to think that it would be possible to design a program that could support the development of a significant change in attitude.

Proof-of-concept testing of our Veterans' Mediation model on a hypothetical "offsetting" challenge, revealed the model's logical sequence for moral repair.

We launched WorkAccord Learning on the Heartbeat platform earlier this week - quietly, intentionally, and with care.

We also adopted a freemium model.

This article shares why we made that choice, who this space is for, and what we’re building together.

This latest Field Note is not a critique. It is a mapping. We are not yet asking what ought to be done differently. We are first asking: What exactly is the space we are being asked to enter as mediators?

Journalising the design process for a veterans' mediation program has been a valuable, reflective discipline.

Here I grapple with the challenges: How do we design space for the exercise of institutional courage and moral repair? Why do we need to?

It has been a worthwhile challenge to journalise the design process for a Veterans' mediation program. Here's a little of what has been directing my thinking abut why such a program needs to be "reparative" rather than "restorative".

"It's Not Fair!"

I’ve been reflecting on what we're saying about “fairness” in our design for a veterans' mediation program. But it’s not so much about what we're saying. It’s more about what we're hearing. And to hear, we have to listen attentively.

There is talk about military justice, criminal justice and procedural justice — as one might expect. But the near-silence around distributive justice in veterans’ systems is disturbing.
