The criminal gets an opportunity to speak to his victim and it becomes clear that he is deranged. But instead of feeling like a crime was solved and a madman was put away I instead feel like the status quo was maintained. The symptoms were treated, but not the disease.

They allow a deranged criminal to prowl the streets at night, even when they have enough to convict him for his crimes, because they want him to do something else and obtain a more severe punishment. Because of this, an innocent woman is allowed to die. The criminal earns the death penalty.

Watched High and Low (1963) by Akira Kurosawa. Very good film. It left me with conflicted feelings. At some point during the story the police seemed more interested in trying to reclaim the ransom and restore Gendo's wealth than protect the public.
