Stalking isn’t always from strangers — it can be by someone you know.

Many of the women we support at Women’s Aid experience stalking from current or former partners.

What can sexual abuse look like? Unwanted touching/kissing or being touched in a way you don't like without giving your permission or consent. Being forced to or guilt tripping you into engaging in sexual activity against your will . Being forced to look at sexual pictures or being filmed/photographed in a sexual way without your consent. Threatening to leak intimate images to pressure you into doing what they say.

What is sexual abuse? Sexual abuse is when someone is forced, pressurised or tricked into taking part in any kind of sexual activity with another person. It can be physical, psychological, verbal or online. Any behaviour of a sexual nature that causes you distress is considered sexual violence or abuse. Sexual abuse can happen between partners, ex- partners, friends and can also happen between family members. Sexual abuse can happen to anyone, of any age or background, at any time.

Statement ON The Murder of Karen Cummings Women's Aid NI would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and the wider Banbridge community following the news of the murder of Karen Cummings on Saturday. Please know our thoughts are with you all at this incredibly distressing time and we cannot begin to imagine what you are going through at the moment, especially at this time of the year. Karen is the 25th woman to be killed in Northern Ireland since 2020, the vast majority of whom were murdered in their own homes. She is also the 7th woman to be murdered in Northern Ireland in 2024. If you have any information that can help the Police with their investigation into Karen’s murder, please contact the PSNI immediately by dialing '101'. Women’s Aid NI today have published our annual regional statistics.

They show a snapshot of the reality for thousands of women across Northern Ireland who have experienced violence, often in their own homes.

527 women stayed in our refuges throughout NI. 291 children stayed in refuge with their mum. 10 Babies were born whilst their mum was in refuge. 10,955 referrals made to Women's Aid Services. 7,637 women received support whilst staying in their own homes. 266 women who were pregnant received support from Women's Aid. 5,293 children had mums supported in Women's Aid Services. 39 women & 31 children with no recourse to public funds stayed in our refuges.
