Melvyn Bragg has been one of the last standard-bearers for a really important, and unfashionable, idea: that good conversation, between people who really know their stuff, on complex or difficult subjects, can be fantastic radio - and that the national broadcaster should do this.

I hope it endures.

As I've been saying, it's clear that the UK has decided to concentrate university spending and R&D on a very small and geographically-concentrated elite. Now okay, that's a decision that will have positives and negatives, but it should at least be made explicit. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

Hi everyone, I am currently scanning archives in the UK and Germany for my project on the German Hanse and the Steelyard in C16 London. Is anyone aware of anything to do with their correspondence and/or account books that may exist? I am hoping to network them; it's looking increasingly fragmented!

Not sure those outside the university sector in the UK know how bad things have gotten and how much worse they promise to get. So far no indication from the government that they have any interest in halting the collapse.
