The debauchery of Job's children can no longer be ignored. The six younger sons have all taken mistresses. Job becomes enraged. Satan the Accuser, born in Job's brain, descends in flames and destroys all the sons and their mistresses. In the center of the composition, the eldest son attempts in vain to rescue his child. One brother in the lower right, falls downward in the position of an upside down crucifixion and tumbles upon a wine goblet and a platter—the wealth that has resulted in his downfall. One concubine lies stretched out in the bottom of the composition with her feet on a timbrel and a lyre, beneath her left arm alluding to the music that she had so degraded to secular pleasure. In the margins, the flames are repeated; two scorpions raise their stings; and the coils of the great serpent, symbolizing the religion of Materialism, are now visible.

Both Job and his friends are silenced because neither has convinced the other and they have no further dialogue. Elihu enters the discussion. He is moved to wrath against Job for justifying himself instead of God and even more his friends for condemning Job. As indicated by his posture, his arguments are drawn from the astronomical universe: his left hand points to the stars, which are also rendered in the margins; his left foot is advanced. He confirms that God and his universe are too great to be comprehended, yet God has a special care for mankind. This is common knowledge yet Elihu's words immerse Job in deep thought; could there be a Redeemer' Job's sleeping Humanity appears in the lower margin with soaring angels striving to awaken him.

The seven days of silent mourning are now over and a new cycle begins. Now Job reacts against his woes. His proverbial patience has ended; he ceases to endure passively his misfortunes. His wrath emerges in a turning point of revolution. He no longer sits beneath the stone cross; it is gone forever. Now he questions his situation and the justice of his disasters, and by this questioning eventually finds the true God. Meanwhile the cross stands above his friends, who remain in error. Ultimately, Job comes to the realization that his great wealth never brought him the happiness of security. He questions the former purpose of his whole life. In the margins, clouds release rain drops upon toadstools, briars and thistles.
