Designing homes that allow wildlife to keep theirs too; fighting local to global habitat loss from my off-grid cabin in the PNW woods.

wildlifeelathome.com | a blog about home + habitat
Been thinking about how much power lives in questions we're afraid to ask. "Who needs it more?" is the start of everything. Just asking creates impact. Ex: pandas need bamboo #forests - we just *want* that bamboo container on the shelf. Keep questioning choices. Hear the #wild in your answers.

Trees out my cabin's window and ...are they glowing? I think they're glowing...

Thought of the week: We talk about 'sustainable materials' like that's the bar. But a green-certified home built on cleared land isn't green for the species that lived there. The most sustainable building choice is usually the one that leaves a forest standing in the first place.

It's so quiet at the cabin tonight. Except for a deer I can hear walking on crunchy leaves. This is all I've actually wanted.

Yes, we are both working hard outside. And yes, we are following the sun spots in the yard to keep warm.

Easy to turn inward when life gets busy. But #wildlife needs us most when we feel we have the least to give. Life won't calm down enough for #conservation to fit in so we build it into the rhythm. Not what we do when all is done, but woven into daily choices. Wildlife can't wait; neither should we.

There's a barely there breeze I feel this evening if I'm still & it's just barely cooler than the still air. The sun is shining, warm. It is the first touch of #Autumn. This moment between a prime season & an always seemingly shorter & transitionary one is ever so precious to me today. #reflections

I think my favorite thing in the world may just be sitting outside my cabin to watch the leaves in a breeze and listen to songbirds; simple moments in between sessions of blackberry picking for the chickens at my feet. Is there a job for that?

"The rain tapped on the metal flue through the roof, with an empty wood stove itching to crackle. Even the wind chimes joined in, hanging from branches across the yard, triangulated as if to keep wizards away."

Adding my #creativewriting on the #blog under the new #fieldnotes tag; feels freeing.

I've tried over and over again for *years* to have a new fav coffee table book. But nothing beats this guy. Its become that fav song that just cannot be beat by another. Please tell me I'm not alone here. What's been your coffee table book for longer than you'd like to admit?

Good view from the coop tonight. These two really do make me a better lady :) I like seeing life through their eyes.

For those who needed a smirk today (like me), here's a wee little chicken egg from a happy ol' lady hen + some evidence of picking countless blackberries today. We reward egg efforts around here ;) Not too bad on the stained fingers front.

Been quieter here lately while I'm deep in job application mode. Really value this community & miss engaging but gotta get the career stuff sorted first. Focusing on landing some stability so I can be present outside those hours for fighting habitat loss through creative conservation work 💙

Because I live alongside wildlife..

..designing for them, too, becomes instinct.

This studio was inevitable..

No mow May has been well extended over here. 💚 seeing the variety of native plants, the colors & what they each do throughout the #season. Hybrid the hen thinks it's cool too. (Don't worry, she & her friends have paths & natural clearings. She just likes adventure outings into the huge #meadow!)

I don't know what I'd do if I wasn't surrounded by nature all the time. I'd certainly be a lot less curious, inspired, grateful and grounded. ...And don't even get me started about the smell of the forest after it rains.

Can you imagine what it first felt like to be here listening to this? Late @ night, here in a makeshift cabin, in the middle of nowhere? 😳

Can you guess who is talking out there?

Hint: nowadays it's completely normal, often but at least not scary. Ohh this life.. 🤭

Sometimes the loosey-goosey sketches done outside with the birds really are how the best ideas flow.

Slow sensory exploration in nature may just be what I need most in this world right now. Enough of it, daily. What is it you need right now?

Most homes displace life.
Few ever find out what was lost.

If you work to defend wildlife, your build shouldn’t undo it all.

If you work for wildlife, your home shouldn’t cost what you defend. Habitat loss doesn’t stop at the job, it shows up in what we build. Most homes undo the very work we fight for.
We need spaces that protect what we protect. Remember all we can do right from home!
